”The Finnish art scene is very white” – unique performing arts debut in Helsinki

Movement artist Yohannes Henriksson introduces the ground-breaking performance The Texture of Connection at the URB festival in the Kiasma theatre.

The Texture of Connection by Yohannes Henriksson offers a fusion of various international talents from Uganda, the USA, the Netherlands, Ghana, Belgium, and of course Finland. Hamis Ahmed, S*an D. Henry-Smith, Sebastian Kurtén, and Saskia Nartey-Wemegah are on stage. Henriksson and lighting designer Sara Lehto are in charge behind the stage. The artists mix their art forms through a unique improv concept to create a fluid whole.

– “In breakdancing, you practise by improvising in a dance ring. People dance and read the impulses of others and act on them. So I thought it would be an exciting idea to develop and add other art elements such as singing for example. You don’t see that very often on stage where everything is choreographed”, says Henriksson.

“Suomen taidekenttä on hyvin valkoinen” – ainutlaatuinen esittävän taiteen teos ensi-illassa Helsingissä

Taiteilija Yohannes Henriksson esittelee uraauurtavan The Texture of Connection -teoksen Kiasma-teatterin URB-festivaalilla.

Yohannes Henrikssonin The Texture of Connection -teoksessa esiintyy kansainvälisiä taiteilijoita Ugandasta, Yhdysvalloista, Ghanasta, Belgiasta ja tietysti Suomesta.

The Texture of Connection premiered on June 15th 2023 at URB Festival in Kiasma Theater in Helsinki. Click here to read more about the project and the artists.
