TelepART: Ilona Salonen

maalis 1, 2022 | TelepART

Dance artist Ilona Salonen is our latest artist to be supported by the TelepART Mobility Support Platform. Salonen will attend a three week laboratory and perform in an international group at the TicTac Art Center in Brussels. She will also perform two short versions of the contemporary solo dance pieces, ”Of Things and Stuff” and ”Sedna” during Crude Saturdays, Tictac’s studio performance evenings. At the end of the trip she will attend a Fighting Monkey Workshop in Brussels for three days.

The residency work on a project facilitated by choreographer Judith Sánchez Ruiz will deepen Salonen’s international cooperation with Ruiz, giving birth to many new contacts. It will provide an opportunity for dialogical reflection on artistic work in a culturally rich environment.

Ilona Salonen works in the field of dance as a facilitator, performer, choreographer and teacher, mainly in southern Finland and project-specific elsewhere in Finland and Europe. She has a master’s degree in Dance Performance (MA, 2019) and a bachelor’s degree in Dance Education (BA, 2013). She has also complemented her education at Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance, Austria (2015-2016).

Her work includes a position of trust as an artist member of Regional Dance Centre of Western Finland. She works as a dance artist fluently in both experimental free-field contemporary dance productions and in large opera productions.

”I educate myself in various courses nationally and internationally. My biggest passion and direction in the field of dance is improvisation.

The last time I attend Judith Sánchez Ruíz’s improvisation workshop was in Barcelona in August 2021. During the past two years I attended Fighting Monkey Courses in Finland and via Zoom as well as Johannes Wieland’s improvisation course in Corsica in 2019.

I am inspired by working at interfaces between different disciplines, such as plants and microorganisms, and combining the performing arts that I am currently doing e.g. In the Fern Orchestra working group. In all my work I strive to promote equal working practices and appreciate horizontal collaborations, including ecological and sustainable reflection on working methods.”
