Finnish performance artist Teo Ala-Ruona’s Parachorale to have its Dutch premiere this May at Vleeshal in Middelburg, the Netherlands.
Ala-Ruona arrives in the Netherlands directly from the Venice Architecture Biennale, where he and his team are featured in the Nordic Pavilion. Parachorale will be performed at the Vleeshal contemporary art center in Middelburg on 17–18.5.2025.
The work continues Ala-Ruona’s ongoing series exploring the paranormal potential of transcorporeality. It combines choral singing, live tattooing, and ritual elements. The performance challenges the othering gaze through which transcorporeality is often perceived as exceptional in society. It creates space for pain and collective pleasure through humour and absurdity.
“It’s wonderful to bring Parachorale to the Netherlands for its premiere, as this piece is very dear to me and I’ve never performed there before. I find the Dutch performance art scene very interesting, and I think it’s important for the work to reach new audiences beyond Finland,” shares Ala-Ruona.
The Dutch programme is curated by Vleeshal curator Jim van Geel and produced in collaboration with Vleeshal and the Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux. Parachorale originally premiered at the Baltic Circle Festival in Helsinki in 2024.
Vleeshal, the venue for the performance, is a contemporary art center located in Middelburg on the west coast of the Netherlands. The former meat market hall is known for its unique Gothic architecture. Vleeshal’s programming combines performance and contemporary art through exhibitions and events. In 2023, it featured an exhibition and performance program by Finnish contemporary artist Emma Jääskeläinen.
The co-producer of the event is the Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux, based in Brussels. The performance is brought to the Netherlands as part of the institute’s pARTir project, which aims to promote international mobility of Finnish artists. The work has also been developed during a residency at Kunstencentrum BUDA in Kortrijk, Belgium. Alongside Teo Ala-Ruona, the performers include Anni Puolakka, Caroline Suinner, Pauliina Sjöberg, and Tuukka Haapakorpi.
“Ala-Ruona is one of Finland’s most internationally significant and currently most sought-after contemporary artists. The Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux has worked with Ala-Ruona for a long time, and we are confident that the unique space of Vleeshal combined with the dreamlike atmosphere of Parachorale will resonate with the local audience,” shares Laura Boxberg, Director of the Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux.

Teo Ala-Ruonan teos saa ensiesityksensä Alankomaissa
Suomalaisen perfromanssitaiteilijan Teo Ala-Ruonan Parachorale-esitys saa ensiesityksensä toukokuussa Middleburgissa, Alankomaissa. Ala-Ruona saapuu Alankomaihin suoraan Venetsian arkkitehtuuribiennaalista, missä taiteilija työryhmineen on esillä Pohjoismaisessa paviljongissa. Parachorale esitetään Middelburgin Vleeshal-nykytaidekeskuksessa 17–18.5.
Teos jatkaa Ala-Ruonan transruumiillisuuden paranormaalia potentiaalia käsittelevää teossarjaa ja siinä yhdistyvät kuorolaulu, live-tatuoinnit ja rituaalit. Esitys haastaa toiseuttavan katseen, jonka kautta transruumiillisuus nähdään yhteiskunnassa poikkeuksellisena. Teos tekee tilaa kivulle ja kollektiiviselle mielihyvälle huumorin ja absurdiuden keinoin.
“On upeaa tuoda Parachorale ensiesitykseen Alankomaihin, koska teos on minulle rakas enkä ole aiemmin esiintynyt siellä. Alankomaissa on mielestäni erittäin kiinnostava esitystaiteen kenttä ja koen tärkeäksi, että esitys saa uusia yleisöjä myös Suomen ulkopuolella”, Ala-Ruona sanoo.
Alankomaiden-kokonaisuuden kuratoi Vleeshalin kuraattori Jim van Geel ja tuotanto toteutetaan yhteistyössä Vleeshalin ja Suomen Benelux-instituutin kanssa. Parachorale sai ensi-iltansa vuonna 2024 Baltic Circle-festivaalilla Helsingissä.
Esityspaikkana toimiva nykytaiteen keskus Vleeshal sijaitsee Middelburgissa Alankomaiden länsirannikolla. Entinen lihanleikkuuhalli tunnetaan ainutlaatuisesta goottilaisesta arkkitehtuuristaan. Vleeshalin ohjelmisto yhdistelee performanssia ja nykytaidetta näyttelyissä ja tapahtumissa. Vuonna 2023 Vleeshalissa nähtiin suomalaisen nykytaiteilijan Emma Jääskeläisen näyttely sekä performanssikokonaisuus.
Esityksen osatuottajana toimii Brysselissä sijaitseva Suomen Benelux-instituutti ja se tuodaan Alankomaihin osana Suomen kulttuuri-instituuttiverkoston pARTir-hanketta, jonka tavoitteena on edistää suomalaisten taiteilijoiden kansainvälistä liikkuvuutta. Teosta on myös valmisteltu residenssissä Belgian Budassa. Parachoralessa esiintyvät Teo Ala-Ruonan lisäksi työryhmäläiset Anni Puolakka, Caroline Suinner, Pauliina Sjöberg ja Tuukka Haapakorpi.
“Ala-Ruona on yksi Suomen kansainvälisesti merkittävimmistä ja tällä hetkellä kysytyimmistä nykytaiteilijoista. Benelux-instituutti on työskennellyt Ala-Ruonan kanssa pitkään ja olemme varmoja, että Vleeshalin ainutlaatuinen tila yhdistettynä Parachoralen unenomaiseen tunnelmaan vaikuttavat paikallisen yleisön”, sanoo Benelux-instituutin johtaja Laura Boxberg.
