Panel discussion. Free event. In English.
The Youth / Masculinities panel discussion takes place at the National Museum of Finland at 18:00 on Wednesday 6.11., and centres around the impacts and perceptions of masculinities among young people today. We hear from different experts and researchers on how boys and young people comprehend masculinities, and how masculinities mark their identity and life experiences.
On the panel we hear from researchers such as Ira Virtanen (Väestöliitto/University of Tampere) and Harry Lunabba (University of Helsinki), with artistic input from the Dutch photographer Ahmet Polat (Studio Polat), Helsinki-based Syrian actor Boodi Kabbani and with Nana Blomqvist (Ekvalita) in the role of moderator. This discussion is held in English.
This event is free and open for everyone. Please note that seating is limited, so make sure to arrive in time to ensure a good spot!
The panel discussion is organised by The Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux in collaboration with The National Museum of Finland, and is held in the auditorium of the museum.
The RE/defining Masculinities is a project initiated by The Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux, with a wide network of partners. The project aims to present and discuss the subject of masculinities from new and cross-disciplinary perspectives through a series of cultural events and academic discussions realised in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Finland. With this project, we hope to stir and evoke critical thinking, and to break outdated moulds and preconceptions as to what the term masculinity entails in our society today, by not only considering its generic forms and public perceptions - but by also addressing the notions of inclusivity and equality.
The project is a part of our theme for 2019, which is RE/definitions, and is part of the Cultural Programme for Finland’s Presidency of the Council of the EU.
