Workshops. In English and/or Finnish.

What is it like to be a boy and grow up to be a man in the 2020s? What kind of model of masculinity is visible on the Internet? At school? With friends? At home? Within hobbies? Where can you truly be yourself while feeling seen, heard and celebrated?

Masculinity is often seen as a narrow model one must adapt to. At the same time manhood is very diverse and in constant motion and change. Gender roles can be are very fluid and context specific.

Poikien Talo’s RE/defining Masculinities workshop will ask participants to stop and examine masculinity and gender roles. Participants will be challenged to discuss how masculinity appears in different contexts and how it affects the well-being of us all. This dialogue-based workshop is designed for young people between the ages of 15 and 17 and is not limited to boys. The workshop will build an understanding of what masculinity could be in the 2020s and how we can work together for a more equal society.

Workshops will be held on Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th of November from 1 pm to 4 pm at Kulttuurikeskus Caisa, and can be arranged in Finnish or in English.

In addition, workshops can be arranged at Poikien Talo on a separate date, please contact cG9pa2llbnRhbG9AcG9pa2llbnRhbG8uZmk= for more information.

The RE/defining Masculinities is a project initiated by The Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux, with a wide network of partners. The project aims to present and discuss the subject of masculinities from new and cross-disciplinary perspectives through a series of cultural events and academic discussions realised in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Finland. With this project, we hope to stir and evoke critical thinking, and to break outdated moulds and preconceptions as to what the term masculinity entails in our society today, by not only considering its generic forms and public perceptions - but by also addressing the notions of inclusivity and equality.

The project is a part of our theme for 2019, which is RE/definitions, and is part of the Cultural Programme for Finland’s Presidency of the Council of the EU.
