RE/defining Masculinities: Boys will be Boys / #dammenbrister

Svenska Litteratursällskapet i Finland
Evening of discussion. Free event. In Swedish.

An evening of discussion on masculinity in the Swedish speaking regions in Finland.

Welcome to an evening of discussion on masculinity at Svenska litteratursällskapet i Finland.

Please note that the event will be filmed and live-streamed.

The evening will focus on two different collections of testimonies.

The #dammenbrister movement started out in November 2017 as a Facebook group in, where women were invited to share their stories of sexual harassment and abuse. Within a week, the group received over 20 000 members, sharing thousands of stories. The stories were publicly released as a call to end the culture of silence in Swedish-speaking Finland.

The Boys will be Boys -research was conducted by the researcher Jakob Löfgren between 2018 and 2019, and consists of stories of men’s experiences in the Swedish speaking regions in Finland, and in Sweden.

During the course of the evening, we will be hearing from Jakob Löfgren, and the researchers Nina Nyman and Ylva Perera, who were both active behind the #dammenbrister movement. The evening will include presentations of both collections, followed by a panel discussion, moderated by Nana Blomqvist from Ekvalita.

The event is organised by The Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux in collaboration with Svenska litteratursällskapet i Finland and Ekvalita.

The RE/defining Masculinities is a project initiated by The Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux, with a wide network of partners. The project aims to present and discuss the subject of masculinities from new and cross-disciplinary perspectives through a series of cultural events and academic discussions realised in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Finland. With this project, we hope to stir and evoke critical thinking, and to break outdated moulds and preconceptions as to what the term masculinity entails in our society today, by not only considering its generic forms and public perceptions - but by also addressing the notions of inclusivity and equality. The project is a part of our theme for 2019, which is RE/definitions, and is part of the Cultural Programme for Finland’s Presidency of the Council of the EU.
