RE/defining Masculinities is a project by the Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux that aims to present and discuss the subject of masculinities from new and cross-disciplinary perspectives, through a series of cultural events and academic discussions realised in Belgium, the Netherlands and Finland.

The project is realised through different events within themed weeks in 2019 and 2020, which approaches the subject of masculinity through cross-disciplinary efforts, in form of panel discussions, film screenings, workshops, and various artistic performances. The 2019 programme will be focused in Helsinki 5.11-8.11.; Amsterdam 13.11.; and Brussels 27.11-30.11., including performances, statements, and expertise from artists, researchers, and activists such as: James Lórien MacDonald (FI), Ima Iduozee (FI), Artor Jesus Inkerö (FI), Jauoud Alloul (BE), Eric Niyibizi Cyuzuzo (BE), Jihan Imago (BE), Harry Lunabba (FI), Ira Virtanen (FI), Ylva Perera (FI), Nina Nyman (FI), Ahmet Polat (NL) Jakob Löfgren (FI), Nana Blomqvist (FI), Kriticos Mwansa (BE), J.M. Kaila (FI), Alexander Cromer (US), Jochen König (DE), Xavier Gorgol (BE), Koen Dedoncker (BE), Kevin Groen (NL), Oscar Lehtinen (FI), with many more. The Helsinki programme equally offers workshops for children and youth, courtesy of project partners Poikien Talo and Ekvalita. The RE/defining Masculinities project is realised in strong cooperation with a wide network partners (for a full list of partners, see bottom of the page).

In addition, the institute has commissioned a video campaign for the project, which features monologues with different people in Finland, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The RE/defining Masculinities Monologues are filmed and edited by the Finnish media artist Timo Wright, and are shared on the institute’s social media, and are screened as part of the project’s themed weeks.
