Possibilities of Potential Selves: Ervin Latimer at AQAF

AQAF - De Studio, Antwerp
Poster for Antwerp Queer Arts Festival 2021, including Ervin Latimer

From August 7th until 14th, Finnish fashion designer Ervin Latimer, who was named Young Designer of the year in 2020, presents a fashion installation during the Antwerp Queer Arts Festival. ‘Possibilities of Potential Selves’ supports the miniature collection Latimer designed for the awards, and investigates the role of fashion in gender expression.

Latimer sought inspiration from the overtly gendered and binary way of dressing of the 1940s and 50s, which he used as the perfect building blocks for the silhouettes and materials of this capsule collection: stiff and masculine wool suits and leather jackets, and conservative yet exaggeratedly feminine dresses and flower patterns.

The exhibition invites visitors to broaden their horizons of clothing and investigate how fashion can be used to strengthen or obscure the expression of gender identity. The installation and its imagery also challenge the general perception of the Nordic identity, questioning who can be seen in fashion imagery in the Nordics and who usually creates these images, and reflecting on the role of nature as an archetype or stereotype of the Nordic identity.

For this occasion, Ervin has collaborated with Belgian photographer Morgane Gielen (No Babes), who used Ervin’s creations in a photoshoot exploring the meaning of the collection.

During the exhibition, Ervin Latimer will also host a talk on his work. The date and details of this talk will be confirmed soon.
