EU-S\u00e1mi Week takes place in Brussels from 20th to 22nd June 2022 for the first time ever! The aim of the week is to strengthen the relationship between S\u00e1pmi and the EU.<\/p>\n

We are incredibly excited to be part of the EU-S\u00e1mi Week cultural programme, supporting S\u00e1mi dance performance\u00a0Starting from Staring<\/i>\u00a0by\u00a0Katja<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Birit Haarla<\/strong>. They will create a new dance piece specially commissioned for the week, which will premier at Beursschouwburg, Brussels on the 21st of June!<\/p>\n

How to meet without any intention? Allowing the kinship to be enough, as its own, is a primary S\u00e1mi value. This is the indigenous ground for the fight against the exploitation of natural resources and of culture.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

What if you wouldn\u2019t leave any trace of human activity behind, any material of your own?\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

These two are starting from staring. A state of being that is nothingness, intense nothingness. Ephemeral, like it is to be as a human being.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

A start without talking. Locking the eyes, dragging the gaze along. Reaching the other one. Creating suspense – or is that suspicion? Waiting for something to move. Reacting, intimidating, discovering playfulness. Somehow important, somehow tensed. Leaving.<\/i><\/p>\n

Landing somewhere else. What is it? A glimpse of the past? A concentration of excitement? A soft fight? A soft fight.<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cThe S\u00e1mis have lived through decades in an agreement with the land in order to perpetuate a long lasting and nourishing way of equal dwelling on this planet. In the context of EU S\u00e1mi week, we wish to dedicate this piece to our fellow S\u00e1mis who we invite to share our conquest of the Beursschouwburg stage\u201d, they encourage.<\/p>\n

\u010ciske Jovsset Biret H\u00e1nsa Outi Biret\u00a0<\/strong>(Birit Haarla) and\u00a0\u010ciske Jovsset Biret H\u00e1nsa Outi G\u00e1ddj\u00e1\u00a0<\/strong>(Katja Haarla) are both dancers and performers coming from Dalvadas, Ohcejohka, the Finnish side of S\u00e1pmi. Together they have created a performance Starting from Staring. Currently studying their final year in P.A.R.T.S. school for contemporary dance in Brussels, Birit and Katja have made several collaborations together, most recently a performance Matriarch for the S\u00e1mi Pavilion in Venice Biennale 2022.<\/p>\n
