This is in honour of the Finnish Swedish Heritage Day, which we celebrate today on the 6th of November in Finland. As a Swedish-speaking Finn, I felt that it was time for a text on the institute’s Swedish Finnish programming, and writing the text in Swedish seemed more than apt for the occasion.

As a Project Manager at The Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux, I have the pleasure of working as part of a multilingual and multicultural arts sector internationally. Language politics is part of daily life in Belgium, with three official languages living in their separate spheres united in one federal state, with Brussels as a multilingual city where languages from all around the European continent and the world can be heard. Least should we forget the additional languages and cultures thriving in Belgium (and in our other areas of operations). At the institute, we’re working with a significant cultural and language diversity, which makes the work itself all the more interesting. It also presents a series of challenges, in particularly language-wise, as we cannot always cater for all of the languages in our areas of operation. At the office, we communicate mostly in English and Finnish, with the occasional conversation held in Swedish, along with some in Flemish, and on occasion, even a little bit of French. This is also mirrored in our external communication, where English is our main language of choice due to its wide reach, and is backed up by Dutch, French, and Finnish. Swedish rarely takes a stand in our communication (and German has not at all), mainly due to lack of resources. Instead we have instead steered our energies into creating more content and programming that raises the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland onto the European map.

This aim can be particularly noted in our RE/defining Masculinities programme 2019-2020, which featured several prominent Swedish-speaking Finnish actors. The institute strengthened collaborations with Swedish-speaking organisations, such as Svenska litteratursällskapet i Finland and Evkalita. Expertise from Swedish-speaking Finland was raised throughout the programme, through the researchers Nina Nyman, Ylva Perera, and Jakob Löfgren in our panel discussion Boys will be Boys/#dammenbrister, the researchers Nana Blomqvist and Harry Lunabba in the panel discussion Youth/Masculinities, and the youth worker Oscar Lehtinen in the panel discussion Crossing/Masculinity. Additionally, we featured several Swedish-speaking voices in our RE/defining Masculinities Monologues, such as the artist Sara Bjarland, the editor Pieter Claes, and the author Adrian Perera.

Asides from academics, Swedish-speaking Finnish creatives have also been featured in our programming. We included Adrian Perera in this year’s edition of Transpoesie, and in addition to a poetry reading in one of the festival’s online events, his poetry was also seen in public transport around Brussels, as well as in the park parc du Cinquantenaire. The institute also screened Rebecca Simons’s documentary Letters from the Past at the WoWmen festival at KAAI theatre in Brussels, and brought the researcher Minna Salami to the festival’s final talk. Even our design programme has included perspectives from Swedish-speaking Finland, with the gallerist Katja Hagelstam and the gallery Lokal, and the designers Jonas Lutz and Rasmus Palmgren, included in this year’s edition of the Collectible fair in Brussels, and by bringing Kim Simonsson’s sculptures to the Call to the Wild exhibition at the Maison Louis Carré in France.

As a Swedish-speaking Finn, I almost see it as my duty to promote and nurture Swedish-speaking cultural heritage as part of my work at the institute, and it’s a duty I gladly perform. We are also working to expand our programming into other language and cultural spheres, including more voices and perspectives outside of the heteronormative and hegemonic patriarchy. We want to converse openly and we want to examine deeper, and we wish to evolve as a cultural institute on a continuously expanding and organic cultural field. It has been a pleasure to work with so many wonderful and complex cultural phenomena – and I am looking forward to new projects and experiences, be they online programmes or (much missed) real life events.

/Malin Bergström, Project Manager

Idag firar vi i Finland svenska dagen, som är en dag då vi uppmärksammar den svenska språkminoriteten och språkkulturen i Finland.
