The fifteenth Alvar Aalto Medal has been awarded to Belgian architect Marie-Jos\u00e9 Van Hee<\/a>. Her output covers a wide range of projects, from private houses to public spaces and cultural buildings. Van Hee\u2019s works beautifully emphasise respect for architecture, nature and handicraft, as well as an understanding of traditional and folk building methods.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Marie-Jos\u00e9 Van Hee\u2019s work] shows a consistently sensitive, contextual, and finely crafted approach. Her architecture is rooted in its context and the surrounding landscape \u2013 not only reflecting but contributing to a Flemish local vernacular over the course of her career. Her work is characterised by a beautifully understated command of natural materials, light and proportions, producing quiet, intimate spaces, designed around daily life,\u201d the Medal jury said in its statement.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Alvar Aalto Medal will be presented to Marie-Jos\u00e9 Van Hee at a ceremony in the University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4\u2019s main building on 22.8.2024, coinciding with the Alvar Aalto Symposium currently being held in the city. Van Hee is the first (individual) woman architect to receive the Alvar Aalto Medal.<\/p>\n

Human-scale spaces that encapsulate human warmth<\/h2>\n

To counteract today\u2019s torrent of media images, the Alvar Aalto Medal jury wanted its choice to highlight buildings and spaces that touch visitors both physically and emotionally.<\/p>\n

\u201cVan Hee \u0301s work is universal and highly personal. It is beautifully understated, relevant, rooted in place. Her ability to translate a sense of place is rare. […] Her buildings contain sensitively choreographed spaces with carefully considered choices for movement. Her spatial intuition fuses with a forensic understanding of human needs. Central to her work is the constant recognition of the human scale […] spaces where people feel good,\u201d says Jury Chair Yvonne Farrell<\/strong> in the jury statement.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u2018I\u2019m honoured and humbled to be awarded the 2024 Alvar Aalto Medal. I would like to thank the selection committee for their appreciation of the work and everyone who helped me achieve it. I was fortunate to experience several of Aalto\u2019s buildings in Finland and France about ten years ago. His architectural language remains close to my heart, a silent influence and source of inspiration,\u201d Van Hee says.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Marie-Jos\u00e9 Van Hee (b. 1950) graduated as an architect from Ghent\u2019s Sint-Lucas School of Architecture in 1974. In 1990, she established her own practice in Ghent \u2013 now Marie Jos\u00e9 Van Hee architecten.<\/p>\n

Van Hee was Professor of Architectural Design at Sint-Lucas School of Architecture (1991\u20132015) and Visiting Professor at ETH Zurich (2016\u20132017). Until 2022, she was a guest critic and lecturer at universities in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France and Switzerland.<\/p>\n

Van Hee\u2019s best-known works include the Fashion Museum \u201cModenatie\u201d (1999\u20132003) in Antwerp her own home, House Van Hee (1994\u20131998), House V-D (2007\u20132020), both in Ghent, and House HdF (2007\u20132011) in Zuidzande, the Netherlands.<\/p>\n

Marie-Jos\u00e9 Van Hee has received several Belgian and international awards, including the Flanders Architecture Prize 2023 and 1997, RIBA International Fellowship 2017, and was selected for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – the Mies Van der Rohe Awards in 2013 and 1999.<\/p>\n

Alvar Aalto Medalist\u2019s exhibition at the Museum of Finnish Architecture and Design Museum in spring 2025<\/h2>\n

An exhibition of Marie-Jos\u00e9 Van Hee\u2019s design work will open at the Museum of Finnish Architecture and Design Museum in Helsinki on 7.2.2025. The exhibition will be shown at the Aalto2 Museum Centre in Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4 in the following autumn. (Further details: ilona.hilden@mfa.fi<\/a>)<\/p>\n

The medal designed by Academician Alvar Aalto<\/strong> and bearing the name was founded in 1967 to honour creative architecture. It can be awarded to any living person who has significantly distinguished themself creatively in the field of architecture. The Alvar Aalto Foundation, the Museum of Finnish Architecture and Design Museum, the Finnish Society of Architecture, the Association of Finnish Architects and the City of Helsinki award the internationally esteemed prize every three years. The winner of the Alvar Aalto Medal 2024 was chosen by a distinguished jury: Professor of Architecture Sharon Johnston<\/strong> (Johnston Marklee & Associates, Los Angeles) from the USA; architect Finn Williams<\/strong> (Public Practice, Malm\u00f6) from Sweden; and architect and journalist Tarja Nurmi<\/strong> (Helsinki) and architect Erkko Aarti<\/strong> (AOR Architects, Helsinki) from Finland. The jury was chaired by architect Yvonne Farrell (Grafton Architects, Dublin) from Ireland.<\/p>\n
