This week, Laura Boxberg<\/strong>, Director of the Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux, wrote an opinion piece for the Helsingin Sanomat<\/a>, the largest subscription newspaper in Finland and the Nordic countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have an effective network of cultural and scientific institutes and art information centres, but investment in the export and mobility of art and culture are still too limited.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We need to invest more heavily in the promotion of art and culture abroad<\/h2>\n

Mikko Koivumaa<\/strong> and Meira Pappi<\/strong> of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote (HS Mielipide 21.11.2022)<\/a> that the biggest challenge for Finland’s image is the lack of recognition abroad. It is great that the ministry recognizes the importance of the role of culture in building the country’s image. There is a demand for Finnish culture and art, but the problem is low funding and a lack of strategic thinking.<\/p>\n

Funding for cultural exports decreased in the 2010s, and the COVID-19 pandemic put a stop to international activities for a while. Now that cultural professionals are on the move again and international operations have restarted, it is time for significant additional investments in the financing of cultural exports.<\/p>\n

In comparison: The Netherlands has invested in culture. The sold-out Vermeer exhibition is no accident, but the result of smart marketing and careful branding. The work is done together: the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation and the Minister of Education, Culture and Science have drawn up an international cultural policy strategy for the years 2021\u20132024<\/a>. The strategy states unequivocally that international cooperation should be the norm, not the exception.<\/p>\n

Genuine growth, credibility and recognition can only be created by professionals. We have an effective network of cultural and scientific institutes and art information centres, but the investments in the export and mobility of art and culture are still too limited. Increasing funding would enable us as actors to respond to the already existing demand for Finnish art and culture in the world.<\/p>\n

By increasing funding and formulating a\u00a0new framework for the\u00a0cultural export strategy in the next term of government, we can raise the profile of artists, increase the share of creative industries in exports and strengthen Finland’s image.<\/p>\n

Kulttuuriviennin rahoitus laski 2010-luvulla, ja koronapandemia pani hetkeksi stopin kansainv\u00e4liselle toiminnalle. Nyt kun ammattilaiset ovat j\u00e4lleen liikkeell\u00e4 ja kansainv\u00e4linen toiminta k\u00e4ynnistynyt uudelleen, on aika merkitt\u00e4ville lis\u00e4panostuksille kulttuuriviennin rahoitukseen.<\/p>\n

Vertailun vuoksi: Alankomaat on investoinut kulttuuriin. Loppuunmyyty Vermeer-n\u00e4yttely ei ole sattumaa, vaan viisaan markkinoinnin ja huolellisen br\u00e4nd\u00e4yksen tulos. Ty\u00f6t\u00e4 tehd\u00e4\u00e4n yhdess\u00e4: maan ulkoministeri\u00f6, ulkomaankauppaministeri\u00f6 ja opetus- ja kulttuuriministeri\u00f6 ovat laatineet kansainv\u00e4lisen kulttuuripolitiikan strategian vuosille 2021\u20132024. Strategiassa todetaan yksiselitteisesti, ett\u00e4 kansainv\u00e4lisen yhteisty\u00f6n tulee olla normi, ei poikkeus.<\/p>\n

Aito kasvu, uskottavuus ja tunnettuus syntyy vain ammattilaisten voimin. Meill\u00e4 on tehokas kulttuuri- ja tiedeinstituuttien sek\u00e4 taiteen tiedotuskeskusten verkosto, mutta panostukset taiteen ja kulttuurin vientiin ja liikkuvuuteen ovat yh\u00e4 liian pienet. Rahoituksen kasvattaminen mahdollistaisi meille toimijoille vastaamisen jo olemassa olevaan suomalaisen taiteen ja kulttuurin kysynt\u00e4\u00e4n maailmalla.<\/p>\n

Lis\u00e4\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4 rahoitusta ja uudistamalla kulttuuriviennin strategiaa seuraavalla hallituskaudella voimme nostaa taiteilijoiden tunnettuutta, kasvattaa luovien alojen osuutta viennist\u00e4 ja vahvistaa Suomen maakuvaa.<\/p>\n
