{"id":15544,"date":"2022-12-13T12:51:57","date_gmt":"2022-12-13T11:51:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/finncult.be\/?p=15544"},"modified":"2023-04-25T14:37:00","modified_gmt":"2023-04-25T12:37:00","slug":"reconnect-luxembourg-contemporary-arts-scene","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/finncult.be\/fi\/reconnect-luxembourg-contemporary-arts-scene\/","title":{"rendered":"On a mission to reconnect with Luxembourg&#8217;s contemporary art scene"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you follow us on instagram, you may have seen us promoting Finnish films screened at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.luxfilmfest.lu\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luxembourg City Festival<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this year (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mission, Hatching, Force of Habit<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and the performance by the Finnish a cappella ensemble <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/rajatonofficial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rajaton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cape.lu\/festival-acapella\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CAPE\u2019lla voice Festival<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But since COVID-19, we have felt a bit of a disconnect with the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and thought it was time to get to know this little country that makes up the final puzzle piece in our area of work. Photos by Yohannes Henriksson \/ The Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Cercle Cit\u00e9<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cultural Programme Manager, <\/span><b>Anastasia Chaguidouline<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, welcomes us into the exhibition space on the ground floor of the cultural hub, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cerclecite.lu\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cercle Cit\u00e9<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The magnificent building located in the centre of the city houses the exhibition space named after the old Ratskeller, reception rooms, a conference centre, the Luxembourg City library, as well as a restaurant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anastasia and her colleague <\/span><b>Camilla Cuppini<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Customer Relationship Manager at Cercle Cit\u00e9, lead us through the parlours; Salon Bleu, Salle Flamande and the Salle des Dames, each as beautiful as the next. Eagerly waiting for the doors of the Grande Salle to be unlocked, we get a sense of the grand balls that must have taken place here at one time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The grandeur and wealth of the city are apparent at every turn, from the futuristic trams that are free (like all public transport in Luxembourg) to the magnificent Christmas markets. We are also impressed by this later, when we visit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/casino-luxembourg.lu\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Casino Luxembourg \u2013 Forum d\u2019art contemporain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in the quality of the space it offers to emerging artists as well as its ambitious visitor assistance and educational programme.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back to Cercle Cit\u00e9, Anastasia tells us more about their programme for 2023-2025, which in 2023 has a heavy focus on photography. The programme includes the photographic series <a href=\"https:\/\/cerclecite.lu\/en\/event\/small-stories-by-david-lynch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Small Stories<\/em> by\u00a0<\/a><\/span><b>David Lynch<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the annual exhibition of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdl.lu\/en\/visiting\/art-and-culture\/photography\/phototheque\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phototheque<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Luxembourg City as well as the European Month of Photography &#8211;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emoplux.lu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EMOPLUX<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> organised bi-annually in Luxembourg since 2007. Next year&#8217;s theme for EMOPLUX will be Rethinking Identity and the theme partially coincides with Cercle Cit\u00e9 plans to launch a series of short film Screenings on Inclusion in collaboration with the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation and CinEast, which will be a first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In fall 2023, the group exhibition Hors-d&#8217;\u0153uvre is planned to take place in connection with the exhibition <em>All you can eat<\/em> at <a href=\"https:\/\/citymuseum.lu\/en\/\">Luxembourg City Museum<\/a>, both covering the theme of food. It will be a nearly all women show, with 80% women artists from Luxembourg and neighbouring countries. The public program will include participatory cooking demonstrations, conferences, a classical concert and a performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerformance as a medium will become more present in Cercle Cit\u00e9\u2019s program starting in fall 2023, with a performance commission to the Luxembourgish artist and choreographer <strong>Tania Soubry<\/strong>. We hope to integrate international performance art in our program in the future as well, and we look forward to collaborating with the Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux in this regard\u201d adds Anastasia Chaguidouline.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2025 will see the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/luga.lu\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luxembourg Urban Garden<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> come to life, the first major horticultural exhibition in Luxembourg, that will last for 6 months and cover more than 20 hectares. The event will include an exhibition on the intelligence of plants. A shiver of excitement spreads through the room as we have quite a few keen gardeners in our team, we will definitely have some Finnish artists to suggest for this!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before we head off to visit Casino Luxembourg, Anastasia tells us a bit more about the Luxembourg contemporary art scene and how it has only started professionalising in recent years. Yesterday, she tells us, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kulturlx.lu\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kultur|lx \u2013 Arts Council Luxembourg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s (founded in 2020 as a non-profit association) status was finally consolidated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We learn that there has been a buying frenzy recently and that many large, commercial galleries have dependents here due to favourable taxes. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/luxembourgartweek.lu\/fr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luxembourg Art Week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, perhaps an opportunity for us to collaborate? Or a gallery swap between young gallerists from Finland and Luxembourg? There seem to be many opportunities to engage and get involved in the upcoming years. Photo by\u00a0Yohannes Henriksson \/ The Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux <\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>L\u00ebtz Rise Up<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next day we meet <\/span><b>Sandrine Gashonga<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, co-founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.letzriseup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L\u00ebtz Rise Up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a feminist and anti-racist association working in Luxembourg and a member of the European Network Against Racism (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.enar-eu.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ENAR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Sandrine tells us about the current situation in Luxembourg, referring to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fra.europa.eu\/en\/publication\/2018\/being-black-eu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being Black in the EU<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report, published by the \u200b\u200bEuropean Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA). Unfortunately, this is where we find something in common, with both Finland and Luxembourg listed as two of the countries with the highest levels of discrimination. There is much work to be done, and L\u00ebtz Rise Up is doing crucial work both at the local level, through workshops at schools and festivals and by partnering in European level projects, such as their current project, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.letzriseup.com\/about-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexpowerement<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sandrine is impressed by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/finncult.be\/programme\/healingdealing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healing &amp; Dealing<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, our programme piloted last year, that consists of two mirrored events; Dealing focusing on anti-racism training for white cultural workers and institutions and Healing bringing together black cultural actors to take a break from the racist power structures that surround them and focus on self-care. \u201cI\u2019m not sure if people are open enough or ready for that here\u201d she comments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sandrine tells us about the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clae.lu\/festival\/festival-des-migrations-des-cultures-et-de-la-citoyennete\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Festival of Migration, Cultures and Citizenship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Comit\u00e9 de liaison des associations d\u2019\u00e9trangers (CLAE). Attracting more than 30.000 attendees, she suggests that this could be an interesting festival for us to take part in next year. We recommend a possible collaboration with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stophatrednow.fi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#StopHatredNow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an intercultural and anti-racist platform organised in collaboration with several art and intercultural organisations in Finland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diversity, Inclusion, and Equality are keywords in the Institute&#8217;s programming. Photo by Ela Suleymangil \/ The Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>TROIS C-L<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our final stop is right around the back of the train station, in a curious looking building with the words <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Banannefabrik<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> written across on it. \u201cAre you sure it\u2019s here?\u201d asks a colleague.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International projects manager <\/span><b>Coraline Garnero <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">greets us at the door of what used to be a fruit warehouse (bananas included) and shows us the many dance studios that are housed within its walls. Together with the Administrative Director, <\/span><b>Mathis Junet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they introduce us to what goes on at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.danse.lu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TROIS C-L \u2013 Centre de Cr\u00e9ation Chor\u00e9graphique Luxembourgeois<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Luxembourg\u2019s leading organisation for contemporary dance. TROIS C-L fulfils several roles on a nationwide basis: supporting and producing artistic work, developing a contemporary dance network, providing continuing professional training and raising awareness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jojo.fi\/en\/jojo-oulu-dance-centre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JoJo, Oulu Dance Centre<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is one of their oldest partners that they have been working with for over 10 years. Oulu?! We immediately suggest connecting them with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/finncult.be\/invitation-to-collaborate-with-the-european-capital-of-culture-oulu2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oulu2026<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the European Capital of Culture, and developing their collaboration there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We learn that TROIS C-L has international residency exchanges with France, Ireland, South Korea and Australia while also working with organisations in Germany and are part of several dance networks: such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.danse.lu\/reseaux\/european-dancehouse-network\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/www.ednetwork.eu\/<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aerowaves.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aerowaves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.danse.lu\/reseaux\/grand-luxe\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grand Luxe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (which includes the Belgian association <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/grandstudio.be\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grand Studio (Brussels)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among their plans for next year a meeting for professionals is planned, which we hope to take part in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15564\" style=\"width: 1260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15564\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15564\" src=\"https:\/\/finncult.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Website-image-5.png\" alt=\"Collage of three images. Luxembourg clearly recognises the social and cultural impact of the creative industry.
